Soding Aftercare

Fresh sod can transform your yard, but proper care in the first few weeks is key to keeping it healthy and thriving. Here’s what you need to know!

Watering

Windsor summers can get hot, so keeping your new sod hydrated is crucial.

  • First 2 weeks: Water every day for 30–45 minutes per area, early in the morning or late in the evening. Make sure the water is soaking into the soil at least 4–6 inches deep.

  • After 2 weeks: Switch to watering every other day (or as needed), depending on rainfall and temperature. Continue watering deeply to encourage root growth—about 45 minutes per zone if the weather is hot and dry.

Foot Traffic

Try to stay off the sod for the first 2–3 weeks while the roots are establishing. Heavy foot traffic too soon can cause uneven patches and slow growth.

Mowing

  • Wait at least 2–3 weeks before your first mow, or until the grass reaches about 3.5" tall.

  • Use a sharp mower blade and only cut the top ⅓ of the grass to avoid stressing it.

Fertilizing

Hold off on fertilizing until about 4–6 weeks after installation. Then, apply a balanced, slow-release fertilizer to help support healthy growth.

Edging & Curbing

Avoid trimming or edging around the curbs until the sod is well-rooted. Let it settle in first to avoid lifting the edges or damaging the turf.
